New archaeological ruins at Pompeii open to the public

Minister Dario Franceschini has inaugurated three restored buildings at the Pompeii Archaeological Park.

Pompeii-site.jpgThe three buildings, which have never been open to the public before, have been restored as part of the Great Pompeii Project and can now be explored by travellers who visit Pompeii.

Pompeii is known as Italy’s lost city after its destruction in 79 AD due to an ancient volcanic eruption. Ash and lava from the eruption buried the city, but also served to preserve the site in unrivalled detail. Today, Pompeii stands as one of the world’s most important archaeological sites and a place where you can take an unprecedented step back in time.

Dario Franceschini, Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, officially opened the Domus and Botteghe buildings, Casa del Triclinio and Casa del Larario Fiorito in a ceremony attended by Massimo Osanna, Director General of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, Luigi Curatoli, Director General of the Great Pompei Project, and Andrea Viliani, Director General of MADRE - Donnaregina Museum of Contemporary Art in Naples.

Speaking at the opening of the new exhibit, Franceschini noted that “Pompeii is the symbol of a story of redemption and rebirth made possible by the long and silent work of cultural heritage professionals.” With the tireless work of researchers and archaeologists, it is hoped that other buildings can be restored as part of the Great Pompeii Project, further confirming the Pompeii Archaeological Park as the world’s most important ancient site.
