About Verona

The magical city of Verona in the Italian region on Veneto is one of the most popular holiday destinations for an Italy honeymoon or romantic getaway. But what makes this city of love so special? Find out all about Verona in this travel article.

History of Verona

Verona-amphitheatre.jpgThe origins of Verona are unclear, and it may have been founded by the Euganei, the Etruscans or the Raetians. What is clear is that Verona had a fruitful alliance with Ancient Rome and became a Roman colony in 89 BC. In fact, the stunning Arena di Verona amphitheatre that still stands to this day is attributed to the Romans.

During the Middle Ages, Verona was the site of several famous battles, with iconic historic figures such as Alaric I and Attila invading the city. It was also a key figure in Italy’s turbulent history prior to unification. However, after falling under the influence of Germany, Spain and France, by the Renaissance period, Verona was given back to Venice and this allowed for the glorification of Verona, with many palaces, churches and convents being built.

Because of the value and importance of Verona’s many historical buildings, the city has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Verona and the Arts

Verona Juliets Balcony.jpgShakespeare

Verona has featured as the setting in several of Shakespeare’s plays, including Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Taming of the Shrew. In particular, the city of Verona has taken the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet to its heart. In the city, you can visit Casa di Giulietta and stand on Juliet’s famous balcony. There are also museums and exhibits dedicated to the play and Verona’s role in their love story.

The Opera Festival

Verona hosts an iconic Opera Festival annually during the summer months. Most performances are hosted at Arena di Verona – the glorious Roman amphitheatre at the heart of the city. In previous years, performances have included Nabucco, Aida, Madame Butterfly, Rigoletto and Tosca. In 2017 there was also a special gala with Plácido Domingo, making the Verona Opera Festival and unmissable treat for fans of the arts.

Art

Verona is the home of one of the oldest Art Academy's in the world, the Academy of Fine Arts, making it a sublime destination for those that enjoy fine art.

Top Verona Attractions

Verona, Castelvecchio.jpgVerona is home to a wealth of attractions, with the most popular including Arena di Verona, Castelvecchio and Piazza delle Erbe. It is a treasure trove of delights for those with an interest in architecture and Verona’s many impressive monuments include:

  • Domus Mercatorum
  • Scaliger Tombs
  • Torre dei Lamberti
  • Palazzo Canossa
  • Arco dei Gavi and
  • Ponte Pietra.

Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta) on Via Cappello, just off Piazza delle Erbe, is also a top attraction but note that this attraction gets very busy during peak season and you may have to wait if you want to visit inside the house and stand on Juliet’s balcony.
