Perfect Italy twin-centres for a honeymoon

If you’re looking for a romantic and relaxing honeymoon featuring beautiful sights and cultural attractions, then Italy is surely ranking highly on your honeymoon wish list.

However, with so much choice and beautiful destinations to visit, you may be struggling with where to go. That’s why a twin-centre holiday in Italy makes the perfect honeymoon, as it allows you to visit more than one resort in one unforgettable honeymoon.

Here is a selection of our favourite twin-city honeymoons in Italy, with tips on where to stay and what to do.

Rome & Sorrento

A twin-centre holiday to Rome and Sorrento is one of our most popular honeymoons as it combines the famous sights in Rome, such as the Colosseum, with the blissful sea views that can only be found on Italy’s south coast in the idyllic town of Sorrento.

Where to stay

Rome: If you are able, we recommend spending a little extra money to stay in a central hotel in Rome so that you can be close to the major attractions. Popular districts include the area around Termini train station and the ancient city centre close to the Trevi Fountain.

Sorrento: If you want to be close to the centre but also take in sea views, then choose a hotel on the coast close to Piazza Tasso. However, if you want peace and quiet, and don’t mind being out of the centre, then a hotel in Sant’Agnello may be perfect for you.

What to do

Rome: Must-sees include the iconic Colosseum and Roman Forum and, if you would like to visit inside with a tour guide, then we recommend pre-arranging this to ensure you book a licensed guide as touts tend to prey on vulnerable tourists outside the Colosseum, who are untrained and usually charge an excess. If you enjoy art, we also recommend visiting the Vatican Museums – although it is essential to book in advance as they get very busy during the peak season. And then there are the classic attractions, which can easily be seen using a hop-on/hop-off bus tour service – don’t miss the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Pantheon!

Sorrento: Thanks to its location, Sorrento is close to plenty of cultural attractions, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, which are two of the most important archaeological sites in the world. From Sorrento, you can also enjoy a day trip to Capri, which is a stunningly beautiful island with pretty Mediterranean gardens and natural rocky caves to discover. Other places to visit include the city of Naples, for which we recommend Citysightseeing bus tour tickets, as well as the villages along the Amalfi Coast.

Venice & Lake Garda

For a romantic twin-resort honeymoon in Italy, we love the combination of Venice with Lake Garda, which combines the mystery and magic of Venice’s canals with the pretty natural scenery to be found around Lake Garda.

Where to stay

Venice: If you want to be close to the main attractions, including St Mark’s Square, it is best to stay within Venice itself, as oppose to the Lido or Giudecca. Popular districts include San Marco and Cannaregio.

Lake Garda: There are many beautiful villages to stay in around Lake Garda. If you want vibrancy, with plenty of bars and restaurants, we recommend Desenzano del Garda, while Sirmione tends to offer better lake views. However, if you want peace and serenity then consider one of the smaller villages, such as Bardolino or Garda.

What to do

Venice: Must-sees in Venice include the St Mark’s area, including the Basilica, as well as Doge’s Palace – just be sure to book if you want to visit inside as they get very busy during peak season. For a cultural day trip, consider visiting the surrounding islands, such as Murano, Burano and Torcello.

Lake Garda: We recommend kicking back and relaxing in Lake Garda, simply enjoying the natural scenery and lake views. However, if you do want to enjoy some activities, we recommend exploring the lake-side villages by either taking the ferry from port to port, or joining a pre-arranged coach and boat tour around the lake. If relaxing isn’t for you, then consider enjoying a day at Gardaland, which is the region’s thrilling theme park.

Florence & Pisa

If you’re eager to explore beautiful city sights on your honeymoon and also want to sample iconic wines from the Chianti region, then consider a twin-centre to Florence and Pisa. While Florence is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and an inspiration for artists, Pisa brings iconic landmarks with its famous Leaning Tower.

Where to stay

Florence: If you’re thinking about exploring the surrounding region, including Tuscan towns such as San Gimignano, then we recommend choosing a hotel in the Santa Maria Novella area so that you are close to the best transport links, whilst also being near the city attractions, restaurants and bars.

Pisa: If you want to be close to Piazza dei Miracoli and the Leaning Tower, then consider a hotel north of the River Arno. However, keep in mind that this area does get very busy. If you would prefer somewhere a little more peaceful, we recommend choosing a hotel in the Cisanello district, so that you are still close to the famous sights but can also enjoy a peaceful setting on your Tuscany honeymoon.

What to do

Florence: There is an abundance of cultural sights to enjoy in Florence, including the two famous art galleries: the Uffizi and the Accademia, the latter of which is where you will find the iconic statue of David. We also recommend enjoying a wine-tasting tour of the Chianti region, and perhaps squeezing in a visit to the ancient town of Lucca, which is known for its laid-back lifestyle and local Buccellato cake.

Pisa: The must-see in Pisa is, obviously, the Leaning Tower, but also don’t miss the Cathedral, where you can see beautiful Romanesque art, and also visit the Baptistry and Campo Santo. For something extra special and memorable, consider a hot-air balloon ride over the city!
