Naples lights up with culture

From October 19th to January 7th a new festival in Naples will be lighting up some on the cities monuments both on the inside and outside, including Palazzo Matteotti, the Royal Palace in Portici, Complex S. Maria La Nova and Gran Caffé Gambrinus. As well as the light exhibitions there will also be special screenings, meetings and tours of historical places.

Naples is often overlooked by holiday-makers vacationing in Italy and this festival has been designed to highlight the historical, architectural and social importance of the city through the use of sound and light. There are three exhibitions at the center of the program, which are designed to illustrate different visions of the city.

Napoli Città Metropolitana, which will be on show from October 29th to January 7th, appears at the cloister of Santa Maria La Nova and was designed by eleven architects, who were tasked with creating a feature that illustrated the “ideal Naples”.

Controluce 1991–2014, which will also be on show at Santa Maria La Nova between October 29th and January 7th, was curated by Maria Savarese and focuses on southern Italy in general, including the city of Naples. The exhibition features photos spanning 25 years, some of which have not been previously published, and features the work of Neapolitan photographers like Mario Laporta, Charles Hermann, Salvatore Laporta, Alfonso Di Vincenzo, Roberta Basile and Alessio Buccafusca.

Later in the festival, from November 25th to January 7th, I Capolavori Della Città Metropolitan Di Napoli will unveil over 50 Neapolitan treasures, including paintings and sculptures, and will appear at Palazzo Matteotti and the Royal Palace in Portici.

Naples combines very well with other cities in the south of Italy for a twin-centre trip, such as Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast, or can be visited on a day trip from many other Italian cities.
